Recirculation
This is a very strategic movement by the players. At times, the
player likes to get his checker hit and restart. As one hit places
the checker on the bar with the same rigmarole of bringing the
checker into the board and then bearing off is necessary, this
decision may be very costly at times.
Pure Game
Some players focus on placing his checkers in the most advantageous
position to achieve his ultimate goal of bearing off faster. This is
called a prime game or prime play. At times, the checkers become
even vulnerable in a pure game.
Golden Point
The 4-point and 5-point on the opponent?s home board is called
Golden point. If one forms an anchor in the golden point, it is said
to be an advanced anchor.
Key point
Key points are the most important strategic points on the board. The
Bar point and 5-point on the opponent?s home board are called the
Key points.
Priming Game
Some players play the game with the key objective of building primes
to hinder the opponent?s movement. These are called the priming
game. A priming game can be very costly, if one does NOT have
sufficient time in accordance to the progress of the game.
Running Game
Some players adopt the strategy of moving the checkers as quickly as
possible to their home board to start bearing off. Significantly
they avoid blocking/ priming to minimize the chances of being hit.
This is called a running game and is highly recommended for the
beginners.
Joker
As backgammon is a game of luck and skill, it has been noticed that
at times a single roll can bring about a drastic change in the
progress of the game, which results an unprecedented Equity swing.
This is called a Joker.
Loose Play
When several checkers are hit and sent back to the bar, it is said
to be loose play for that player. Loose play can become fatal with
the progress of the game.
Spare Checker
A checker which is redundant in making a point. Any number of
checkers exceeding two in any particular point is said to be a spare
checker.
Safety a checker
Take your checker out of the danger of being hit.
Indirect Shot
As backgammon gives you the advantage of rolling two dice at a time,
so the count from the throw does not limit only to 6. It can be even
12. Indirect shot is a method, when one can hit the opponent by
combining the two numbers, thrown by the dice.
